At the junction of what we now know as Kosovska St, Nusiceva St, Decanska St, up until WWII, there was a gladly visited Belgrade kafana. Following the smell of gibanica, or maybe the noise of unbridled thoughts, many have found their spot in “Two falcons”. Between the tavern walls “made of weak materials”, clerks, students, craftsmen, passersby, and bohemians could find a compassionate soul or inspiration for future verses and prose.
This tavern was mentioned for the first time in the list of taverns from 1860. Then it was led by Andreja Djordjevic. The townspeople knew it for its good beer and the already mentioned pie. Later, from 1922, the Association of Painters chose “Two Falcons” as its headquarters. In the interwar period, in this place you could also hear the youth from the Students’ Circle, and their dreams of solving the social issues of the time and righting wrongs… at least until it was demolished for the sake of widening the road in the capital, which was slowly but surely transforming.
Throughout history, few truly egalitarian places can be found. Maybe that’s why they remain so long in the memory of the mechanics that closed their doors for the last time a long time ago. People from all walks of life were always welcome in the pubs. Political discussions, as much as philosophical thoughts from the bottom of a glass, joy and disappointment filled the air at the intersection of three alleys for less than a hundred years, as long as the “Two Falcons” stood at this place.
